Cockenzie Power Station

Cockenzie Power Station, East LothianCockenzie Power Station in East Lothian runs on pulverised coal, which is co-fired with biomass fuels, such as wood pellets and sunflower husks. Ash is produced as a by-product. This is used as a resource by ScotAsh to manufacture high quality, sustainable construction products, with any surplus directed to the station ash lagoons.

The station, which has been operating since 1968, has four 300MW units, giving it an installed capacity of 1,200MW. At full load it can generate enough power to serve more than half a million homes.

ScottishPower is currently examining various options for electricity generation at Cockenzie site with operating hours now limited by the decision to “opt out” under the Large Combustion Plant Directive.

The power station and associated lagoons operate subject to conditions contained in Pollution Prevention Control (PPC) permits issued and enforced by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA).

The station operates an Environmental Management System that is certified to the international standard ISO 14001.
