Emissions
SMW Ltd have fitted Regenerative Thermal Oxidisers (RTO) on each of the plant’s three exhaust stacks to abate odour and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
RTOs heat the gases released during the drying process so that the VOCs are broken down and burnt. A Continuous Emission Monitoring (CEM) system has been installed on each stack to demonstrate to SEPA that emissions limits have not been exceeded.
Performance - 2008
- By the end of 2008, the volume of processed sludge pellets (PSP) produced since the Daldowie plant began commercial operation in 2002 reached nearly a quarter of million of tonnes.
- In 2008 SMW processed 1,934,220 tonnes of sludge, producing 46,618 tonnes of dry pellets. This weight of PSP can generate 74,588 MWh of electricity, offsetting around 33,000 tonnes of coal and saving about 72,000 tonnes of CO2.
