Hatfield Moor Gas Storage Facility / Hatfield Moor Environmental Management

Biodiversity

Much of the gas storage facility is adjacent to or within the Thorne and Hatfield Moors - the largest remaining raised bog wilderness in lowland Britain.

The moors are covered by natural history designations including a Special Protection Area (SPA), Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and also forms part of the Humberhead Peatland National Nature Reserve.

Hatfield Moor Gas Storage Facility has operated a Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) since 2005 that aims to develop habitats on its landholdings that are in harmony with those of the adjacent peatlands.

Areas of rough grassland, woodland and shrubs, and a hedgerow - particularly at Lindholme -are being managed or improved for wildlife.

The Lindholme site also operates in a way to minimise disturbance to the local breeding population of Nightjars - a UK Biodiversity Action Plan species. Studies are continuing into the possible impact of night-time operations at the site on the birds breeding.

The facility also supports the work of local conservation and arachaeology groups.

Performance - 2008

  • In 2008, Hatfield Moor’s compressor package operated for 2,714 hours during the export of gas from the storage facility. This is a reduction of 65 hours from 2,779 hours in 2007
  • A new maintenance agreement was signed with the gas compressor package’s turbine manufacturers Salar to ensure high levels of combustion performance
  • A water minimisation audit was carried out to identify areas of further townswater savings. A rainwater collection system previously installed has reduced townswater use by 50%
  • A waste minimisation audit was carried out to identify opportunities for further waste re-use and recycling. The site recycles wood, scrap metal, electrical equipment, paper, tin and plastic. Oily water is removed offsite by a specialist contractor who extracts the oil for reuse
  • The gas storage facility donated £1500 to Woodhouse Primary, Hatfield, to help senior pupils develop a vegetable patch and nature area at the school
