Hatfield Moor Gas Storage Facility

Hatfield Moor Gas Storage Facility, near Doncaster, is used by Energy Wholesale to store up to 4.1 billion cubic feet of natural gas - enough to supply the peak demands of 450,000 ScottishPower customers.

ScottishPower uses Hatfield Moor to manage swings in demand and to buy additional gas to storefor later use.

The facility, commissioned in February 2000, makes use of a depleted gas field located 1,450 feet below ground. A layer of porous sandstone works like a solid sponge to "soak up" the injected gas for storage until it is required.

Hatfield Moor operates subject to conditions contained in an Environmental Permit issued and enforced by the Environment Agency.

The station’s Environmental Management System is certified to the international standard ISO 14001.
