Longannet Power Station
Longannet Power Station in Fife, with its four 600MW generating units is the second largest power station in the UK.
The station runs on pulverised coal, which is co-fired along with biomass fuels, and generates enough power to meet the needs of two million homes. Ash is produced as a by-product. This is used by ScotAsh to manufacture high quality, sustainable construction products, with any surplus directed to the station ash lagoons.
The station has been operating since 1972 and ScottishPower continues to invest in Longannet to improve its environmental performance.
The power station and associated lagoons operate subject to conditions contained in Pollution Prevention Control (PPC) permits issued and enforced by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA).
The station’s Environmental Management System is certified to the international standard ISO 14001 and meets the requirements of the EU’s Eco Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS).
