Our Business
Wholesale Energy Markets
At ScottishPower we believe that fair and transparent wholesale energy markets are in the best long-term interests of all stakeholders, especially our customers.
Transparent reporting of generation activities
We believe that it’s important that stakeholders can have confidence that wholesale energy markets are operating in a fair manner. To this end, it’s important that relevant information is published in a timely manner on activities which may impact market prices.
Detailed data regarding our generation activities and retail volumes is already centrally reported on behalf of market participants by Elexon and National Grid. However, in 2011 we started to publish more details regarding our generation and gas storage assets in order to further improve transparency.
- Reports regarding these activities are regularly updated to reflect the latest operating conditions, and can be viewed via the link marked "Asset Status Update"
- Details of our planned plant outages, as provided to National Grid under our existing OC2 Grid Code obligations and already published by Elexon on the BMreports website, can be viewed via the link marked "Planned Outages"
Wholesale trading relationships
At ScottishPower we believe that it’s important that fair market access is available for all wholesale market participants, large or small, incumbent or new-entrant.
We have established bilateral trading relationships with a number of independent retail energy suppliers, under which we supply them with wholesale power which meets their specific needs over a range of durations. We also have longstanding bilateral trading relationships with a number of independent generators whereby we buy output from a range of organisations, from operators of small community projects to operators of large coal or gas-fired plants, and many projects in-between of most technologies. Furthermore, we are active members of a number of energy exchanges including APX, ICE and N2EX. These exchanges offer further options for market access to new entrants without imposing the need to agree credit lines and master agreements with multiple market counterparties on a bilateral basis.
In 2010 we made a series of voluntary commitments via a letter to our regulator Ofgem, which were built on existing practices, to help independent energy suppliers to enter and contest the retail energy supply markets. These commitments can be viewed via the link below.
